Apple is now shipping iLife '09. This new suite includes several enhancements to iMovie '08 and is said to add back some of the features that had been left out since the revamp of the iMovieHD '06 version. Apple released a summary of the new features here. After viewing the guided tour of new features in iMovie'09, I am quite impressed with it. Obviously, I need to still order it and play around with it myself, but at first glance it appears to be a much improved version over iMovie'08. More editing capabilities are available as well as more effects and transitions. It even includes several theme templates. Apple seems to be moving in the right direction regarding iMovie'09.
You may also be aware that Apple releases excellent tutorials to get you started on any of its iLife applications. I've included the link here. I recently watched a series of tutorials for GarageBand since I had not immersed myself into it yet. I found them very helpful and was making all kinds of audio adjustments and enhancements to my recordings in no time.
